What Actually Makes a Custom Window Blind Worth It — And Why Indian Homes Need One
Here is something most people don't realise until they've wasted money on three sets of wrong-sized blinds: Indian windows don't follow any standard. A flat in Powai might have 2.8 ft windows. A row house in Whitefield might have 4.3 ft. A DDA flat in Delhi? Could be anything. Ready-made blinds are made for some imaginary average home that doesn't quite exist — which is why they never quite fit.
Customized printed window roller blinds are cut to your actual window, down to the millimetre. That means no awkward gaps on the sides, no trimming that breaks the mechanism, and no apologising for how the room looks. We make five types — Roller, Blackout, Zebra, Roman, and Venetian — all available in motorized versions. Prices start at ₹199 per square foot for roller blinds and go up to ₹199/sq ft for fully motorized smart blinds with Alexa and Google voice support. A flat shipping fee of ₹399 applies across India. For international orders, shipping charges are calculated based on the destination and are payable by the customer. — no exceptions. (Pricing according to Aura Home Decors)
The Real Reason Standard Blinds Fail in India — And How Custom printed Roller Blinds Changes That
Most imported blinds are tested in European or American weather. Not Indian weather. There's a reason your neighbour's generic roller blind from a discount store faded within a year — the UV index in most Indian cities is brutal, and standard fabrics simply aren't built for it. Our printed custom blinds use UV-stabilised fabrics designed specifically for the Indian climate, and they hold their colour even on south-facing windows that bake in direct sun for 8 hours a day.
If you're in Mumbai, Chennai, Kochi, or Goa, and otehr tier 1,2, or 3 cities humidity is the other problem. Salt air, monsoon moisture, and perpetually damp walls will mildew or warp most untreated fabrics within a season. Our moisture-resistant options — especially the PVC Venetian blinds — handle all of that without complaint. Fully waterproof, easy to wipe down, zero warping.
And then there's the heat question. A well-chosen blackout or thermal-lined blind can cut solar heat gain through a window by up to 40%. That's not a marketing claim — that's the difference your AC feels on a 42°C May afternoon in Delhi. Some customers have tracked a 15–25% drop in their electricity bills in rooms where they switched to thermal blinds. Millimetre-precise sizing also means no edge gaps — those small slivers of light that render an ordinary blackout blind basically pointless at 6 AM.
Which Blind Works Best in Which Room — An Honest Room-by-Room Guide
There's no single "best blind" — it depends entirely on the room. Here's what ten years of custom blind installations across Indian homes has taught us about what actually works where.
Bedroom: Blackout. Always blackout. Especially if you're in a building where the neighbour's terrace light floods your room at 2 AM. Shift workers, new parents, and light-sensitive sleepers — this one's non-negotiable.
Living Room: Zebra blinds are the crowd favourite here — you get privacy without losing natural light, and the look is genuinely impressive. Roman blinds work beautifully in larger, more formal living spaces.
Kitchen: Waterproof PVC Venetian. No fabric blind survives long-term in an Indian kitchen. Grease, steam, the occasional splash — PVC handles all of it and wipes clean in seconds.
Office / Work from Home: Light-filtering roller blinds or Venetians. Eliminates screen glare without making the room feel like a cave.
Bathroom: Again, PVC Venetian. Steam-resistant, moisture-proof, and available in finishes that look genuinely stylish rather than purely functional.
Nursery: Cordless blackout with VOC-free fabric — dark enough for uninterrupted naps, with zero loose cords near a child's reach. Non-negotiable for safety.
Home Theatre: Full blackout, ideally motorized. So you never have to get up from the couch to close a blind in the dark.
Office or Commercial Space: Fire-retardant motorized blinds with BMS integration — built for heavy daily use and a clean, corporate look.
How to Measure Windows for Custom Blinds
Half the people who message us on WhatsApp start with "I'm scared I'll get the measurements wrong." Completely understandable — but genuinely unnecessary. Getting accurate window measurements takes about three minutes per window and a basic tape measure. Here's every scenario you'll face in an Indian home, explained plainly.
Inside Mount (Recess Fit) — The Cleaner Look: This is when the blind sits neatly inside the window frame opening, giving a built-in, architectural appearance. Measure the width at three points — top, middle, and bottom of the opening — and use the narrowest number. Measure the drop (height) at three points — left edge, centre, right edge — and use the tallest. Subtract 5 mm from the final width so the blind moves smoothly without scraping. Quick check before choosing this option: the recess should be at least 60 mm deep for roller blinds, 50 mm for Venetians. Anything shallower and you'll need the outside mount instead.
Outside Mount (Overlap Fit) — Better Blackout, Easier Install: The blind mounts on the wall above the window frame, covering the opening and extending beyond it. Add 50–70 mm to each side of the visible frame width — this eliminates the slivers of light that ruin an otherwise good blackout blind. Mount the bracket at least 70 mm above the frame top. Let the blind hang 50 mm below the sill. This is the approach I'd recommend for most Indian bedrooms and any window where you're serious about blocking light.
French Doors: Measure only the glass panel — not the entire door. Add 25 mm on each side, 50 mm at the bottom. Important: tell us where the door handle sits so we can leave a cutout. A blind that catches on the handle every time you open the door is a problem we can easily prevent.
Sliding Glass Doors: Large sliding doors really benefit from motorized blinds — closing a heavy manual blind across a full 8-foot sliding door every day gets old fast. Measure the full glass area width and the drop from the top track to the floor. We recommend dual-panel rollers for anything wider than 5 feet.
Still not confident? Send us a photo of your window on WhatsApp. We'll measure from the photo, confirm with you, and only proceed once the numbers are agreed. This free measurement service has saved hundreds of our customers from costly mistakes.
Blackout vs Light-Filtering vs Sheer — Stop Guessing and Pick the Right One
This is the question we get asked most — and most people answer it wrong because they focus on style before function. The fabric you choose determines how your room feels every single morning. Get it right and you'll never think about it again. Get it wrong and it'll quietly annoy you for years.
Blackout (blocks 98% to 100% of light): If you have ever tried to sleep past 6 AM with a thin curtain over an east-facing window in summer, you already know why blackout exists. Our blackout fabrics are triple-weave — meaning the light-blocking layer is woven into the fabric rather than coated on, so it won't peel or degrade over time the way cheaper alternatives do. Beyond sleep, blackout blinds are serious thermal insulators. In a sun-exposed bedroom, they reduce heat coming through the glass by up to 40%. Some of our customers in Chennai and Jaipur have measured a 15–25% drop in their monthly AC bill after switching. They also absorb noise — around 15–20 decibels — which matters if your bedroom faces a main road or a neighbourhood that doesn't believe in quiet hours.
Light-Filtering (semi-opaque): Imagine the quality of light in a good café — warm, even, no harsh shadows, no blinding patches. That's what a light-filtering blind does for a room. You lose the directness of sunlight but keep the brightness. From outside, people can see your silhouette but not your face or your belongings — reasonable daytime privacy without making the room feel closed off. These work brilliantly in living rooms, dining areas, offices, and kitchens where you want a bright, welcoming space without the glare that makes screens impossible to read. Thermal benefit is moderate — roughly 20–25% heat reduction.
Sheer (high transparency): Sheers let the outside in — light, sky, garden view — filtered through a soft gauze-like fabric. Lovely for living rooms with trees or a view worth keeping. They offer the least privacy (silhouettes are visible day and night with interior lights on) and the least heat reduction, so they work best layered with a second blind or curtain for evening use. In zebra blinds, the sheer stripe gives you this effect alternated with an opaque stripe — switchable by rotating the fabric. Very popular in Indian living rooms for exactly this reason.
The dual blind option most people don't know about: You can mount a blackout roller and a sheer roller on the same bracket — one cassette, two fabrics, one window. Morning: sheer open, light floods in softly. Night: blackout closed, complete darkness. It costs slightly more than a single blind but dramatically less than curtains plus a blind, and it looks considerably cleaner.
Child Safety & Custom Blinds
This section is uncomfortable to write, but it matters too much to gloss over. Window blind cords are a strangulation hazard for young children — not a theoretical one, a documented one. Most parents in India have no idea this risk exists because it's rarely discussed. Standard looped cords, especially the kind that form a fixed loop when the blind is raised, can trap around a child's neck in seconds. Children under five are most at risk.
The good news is that modern custom blind design has essentially solved this problem — as long as you know to ask for the right options.
Cordless Spring-Lift: Our most popular child-safe mechanism. Push the bottom rail up, it stays. Pull it down, it stays. No cords at all. The spring tension is calibrated to the exact weight and size of your blind — it doesn't fight you, and it doesn't sag. Available on all roller, Roman, and zebra blind types. We strongly recommend this for any home with children under eight, or with curious pets who've discovered that dangling cords are endlessly entertaining.
Breakaway Connectors on Venetian Tilt Cords: Venetian blinds need a tilt cord to angle the slats — it's unavoidable. But our Venetian blinds use breakaway connectors that snap apart under very light pressure. If a cord forms a loop around anything, it releases before it can constrict. These meet BIS guidelines and exceed international WCMA (Window Covering Manufacturers Association) safety requirements.
Motorized — Zero Accessible Parts: If child safety is the priority, motorized blinds are the clear answer. No cords, no chains, no moving parts a child can reach. Operate via remote, app, wall switch, or voice commands. The blind goes up and down on command — that's it. Children see no mechanism to interact with. Pets have nothing to bat at. Starting at ₹699/sq ft, motorized is now genuinely accessible pricing for most homeowners.
VOC-Free, OEKO-TEX Certified Fabrics: Safety in a child's room isn't just about cords. Fabrics that off-gas volatile organic compounds in an enclosed, air-conditioned bedroom are a low-level but real concern, especially for children with respiratory sensitivities. Every fabric we use is certified VOC-free and meets OEKO-TEX Standard 100 — meaning it's been independently tested for harmful substances and found safe for skin contact and indoor air quality.
BIS Compliance: All our blinds are manufactured to Bureau of Indian Standards guidelines for window covering safety. When our installation team fits your blinds, they will always advise on the safest mounting configuration for your specific window — including keeping wall brackets and cleat hooks above reach height.
Roller vs Zebra vs Roman Blinds — Which One Deserves Your Window?
These three are our bestsellers, and for good reason — they cover the vast majority of what Indian homes actually need. But they're not interchangeable. Here's an honest breakdown of where each one excels and where it falls short.
Roller Blinds — The Reliable All-Rounder: One fabric panel, one rolling mechanism, one cassette at the top. Simple, durable, and available in the widest range of fabrics of any blind type. Blackout fabric for the bedroom. Light-filtering for the office. Waterproof PVC for the kitchen. Sheer for the living room. The roller blind can do all of these roles — just different fabrics. It's the most affordable type we make, starting at ₹199/sq ft, and the easiest to maintain. If you're choosing blinds for a practical room where the blind is more function than feature — this is probably your answer. The one limitation: a single fabric layer means you're committing to one level of light control per window, unless you go with the dual-roller setup.
Zebra Blinds — The Living Room Favourite: Zebra (also called day-night or dual-layer) blinds have alternating horizontal stripes of sheer and opaque fabric on a single roller. Rotate the fabric one way — the sheer stripes align and light filters through softly. Rotate the other way — the opaque stripes align and you have genuine privacy and shade. No changing blinds, no dual setup. You get both functions from one product. They're our most Instagrammed installation, and honestly, they deserve to be — the shadow pattern they cast on walls in afternoon sun is genuinely beautiful. Priced from ₹299 to 699/sq ft. The trade-off: they don't achieve full blackout in any position, so they're not the right call for bedrooms of light-sensitive sleepers.
Roman Blinds — When the Room Deserves Something Special: Roman blinds fold upward in soft horizontal pleats — picture cascading fabric that frames the window even when partially open. They bring genuine warmth and texture to a room in a way that roller blinds simply don't. Available in cotton, linen, silk-blend, and synthetic fabrics, they're the interior design choice — typically seen in master bedrooms, formal living rooms, and dining rooms where the visual weight of fabric matters. Starting at ₹349 to 899/sq ft. Where they're less suitable: high-humidity rooms like kitchens and bathrooms, and any space where someone's going to open and close the blind 15 times a day.
Motorized Smart Blinds in India — The Honest Guide (Including What They Cost)
Three years ago, motorized blinds in India were either very expensive or very unreliable. That's changed significantly. The motor technology has matured, prices have dropped, and smart home integration — Alexa, Google Home, Apple HomeKit — has made motorized blinds genuinely useful rather than just impressive. Here's what you actually need to know.
How the Motor Works: A compact tubular motor sits inside the blind's top roller — invisible from outside. It receives commands through RF (radio frequency), Wi-Fi, or Bluetooth, depending on the model you choose. The motor operates silently (under 35 dB — quieter than a whispered conversation) and moves the blind smoothly at a consistent speed. There's no jerking, no stopping halfway, none of the quirks that plagued earlier generations of the technology.
What "Smart" Actually Means Day-to-Day: You can tell Alexa to close the bedroom blinds while you're still in bed. You can set a schedule — blinds open at 7 AM, close at noon when the sun is direct, reopen at 4 PM, close fully at 10 PM — and never touch them again. You can create a "Movie" scene that closes every blind in the room with one tap. You can check whether you left the blinds open from your office. The automation, once set up, essentially removes window management from your mental to-do list entirely.
Battery vs Hardwired — How to Decide: If you're fitting blinds in an existing home where running new electrical wiring to the window area is difficult (most Indian apartments), choose battery motors. A single lithium battery charge lasts 4–6 months of normal use and recharges via USB-C. No electrician required, no wall damage, no visible wiring. For new construction or full renovations where wiring can be planned in advance, hardwired motors are more reliable long-term and eliminate the need to remember charging schedules.
What It Actually Costs: At Aura Home Decors, blinds are priced starting at ₹199/sq ft. For motorized blinds, the motor cost is added separately depending on your selected option. Despite common belief, motorized blinds are quick and hassle-free to install, with most full-room setups completed in under two hours.
Custom Blinds for Indian Weather — Summer, Monsoon, Winter, Coast
India doesn't have one climate. It has about fifteen. The requirements for a window blind in Jodhpur in May are almost entirely different from what you need in Kochi in August, or Shimla in January. This is why most off-the-shelf blinds — designed for temperate European weather — struggle here within a year. Here's how custom blinds address each major climate scenario.
Summer (March–June) — Fighting the Heat: The priority is keeping solar heat out. Our UV-stabilised blackout and thermal fabrics reflect up to 40% of solar heat before it enters the room — the single biggest factor in whether your AC runs at 20°C all afternoon or cycles on and off comfortably. For west-facing windows where afternoon sun is the problem, we recommend a light-coloured fabric with a reflective backing — lighter colours reflect more heat than dark ones, a detail that's obvious in retrospect but that most people don't think about when choosing blinds by colour alone.
Monsoon (July–September) — Humidity, Rain, and Dampness: For fabric blinds, we apply a nano-coating water repellent treatment that makes water bead and roll off rather than soaking in. This prevents the musty smell and mildew staining that ruin most fabric window treatments after a few monsoon seasons. For windows directly exposed to rain or kitchens and bathrooms with heavy steam, our waterproof PVC Venetian blinds are the unambiguous choice — nothing gets through them, and they wipe completely clean. Motorized blinds are especially useful during monsoon — you can close all windows from your phone the moment rain starts, even if you're at the office.
Winter (October–February — North India): In Delhi, Chandigarh, Lucknow, and the hill stations, winter warmth retention through windows matters. Thermal-lined Roman and roller blinds reduce heat loss through the glass by up to 35% — particularly relevant for older Indian homes with single-glazed windows (which are terrible insulators). The practice of closing blinds at dusk to trap the day's warmth inside is standard advice in cold climates and it genuinely works.
Coastal Cities (Mumbai, Chennai, Kochi, Goa): Salt-laden air is surprisingly corrosive to metal blind components. Our coastal installations use anodised aluminium hardware rather than standard steel brackets — no rust, no staining, no seized mechanisms after two years near the sea. Fabrics get the mildew-resistant nano-coating as standard. For windows that are regularly exposed to sea spray or heavy rain, we'll proactively recommend PVC Venetian as the primary choice and explain why in plain terms.
Commercial Custom Blinds — Offices, Hotels, Restaurants & What's Different About Them
Commercial blind installations are a different world from residential ones — not more complicated, just different priorities. In a home, a blind might be opened and closed three times a day. In a hotel room, the same blind might operate 20+ times daily across years of guest use. The mechanism that's perfectly adequate for a bedroom won't last 18 months in a hotel.
Offices & Co-Working Spaces: Screen glare is the productivity killer that office managers consistently underestimate. The light-filtering roller blinds or Venetians we specify for offices eliminate glare from monitors without making the room feel dim or enclosed — our design team can advise on the right fabric opacity for each window orientation in your office. For conference rooms and presentation spaces, motorized blackout blinds are the standard now — one button and the room is ready for a screen. All our commercial fabrics are available in fire-retardant grades certified to international standards, which is typically a requirement for commercial building permits in India.
Hotels: We've done over 200 hotel projects across India, from boutique guesthouses in Goa to business hotels in Bengaluru. The most popular specification for guest rooms is motorized blackout roller blinds with key-card integration — blinds open to a preset position when the guest taps their card at the door, and close automatically at turndown. For lobby areas and restaurants, the specifications shift toward zebra and sheer fabrics that control the atmosphere without cutting it off from natural light. Bulk pricing is available for projects of 20+ rooms — contact our commercial team for project-specific numbers.
Restaurants & Cafes: The right window treatment does real work for a restaurant — it protects the furniture and artwork from UV fading (significant cost saving for establishments with good pieces), controls the transition from bright lunch service to intimate dinner ambience, and gives staff a tool to manage the room's mood. Zebra blinds are particularly popular for restaurant use because of this flexibility. Our UV-blocking fabrics can reduce fabric and upholstery fading by up to 80% compared to uncovered windows.
Large-Scale & BMS Projects: Our motorized systems integrate with Building Management Systems for centralised floor or building-wide control. For large commercial projects, we assign a dedicated project manager — a single point of contact who handles site surveys, specification, manufacturing coordination, and installation scheduling. We've delivered and installed across 500+ commercial properties in India, from single showrooms to multi-floor corporate campuses.
Ready-Made vs Custom Blinds — The Honest Cost Comparison Nobody Does
I've heard the objection hundreds of times: "Custom blinds are expensive." It's worth looking at the actual numbers rather than the assumption.
Walk into any large home furnishing store and you'll find roller blinds in 3 ft, 4 ft, 5 ft, and 6 ft widths. If your window is 4.3 ft wide — which is extremely common in Indian apartments — you have two choices: buy the 4 ft blind and leave a 3-cm gap on each side (goodbye blackout performance), or buy the 5 ft blind and trim it (goodbye warranty and often the mechanism with it). Neither is a satisfying solution. That's before we even discuss the fabric quality, which at ready-made price points is almost always a thin polyester that fades noticeably within 12–18 months of Indian sun exposure.
The real cost comparison: A custom roller blind for a standard 4 ft × 5 ft window costs approximately ₹3,980 from us (₹199/sq ft × 20 sq ft). A comparable ready-made blind — correctly sized by luck, with decent quality — typically costs ₹4,000–₹6,500 at a good store. In many cases, custom blinds offer better value at a similar or even lower price. With us, you get an exact fit, a fabric of your choice, and a 5-year mechanism warranty, whereas ready-made blinds usually offer only up to six months.
Lifespan data from our own installations: Custom blinds with a proper fit last 4–8 years on average, because the mechanism isn't under stress from the wrong sizing. Ready-made blinds in non-standard Indian windows typically need replacement at the 2–4 year mark — either because the mechanism fails under incorrect tension, the fabric fades below acceptable appearance, or the slats warp from improper fit. Run those numbers over ten years and the custom blind is consistently cheaper per year of use.
What the warranty actually means: Our 2-year mechanism warranty covers any operational failure under normal use — motor failure, spring failure, tilt rod failure. The 2-year fabric warranty covers colour fade and delamination. If either fails within the covered period, we replace — no questions, no charge. Custom blinds also have a measurable effect on home perception — interior designers consistently note that well-fitted, high-quality window treatments are among the details that buyers and tenants notice and value. It's a detail that actually shows.
How to Order Custom Window Blinds from Us — 5 Steps, No Complication
We've worked hard to make the ordering process feel more like a conversation than a transaction. Here's exactly what happens from first enquiry to fitted blinds on your wall.
Step 1 — Choose Your Blind Type: Browse the options on this page, or skip straight to WhatsApp and tell us the room, the issue ("I need complete blackout for the bedroom" / "I want something that controls light without closing the room off"), and we'll tell you what we'd recommend and why. We respond within 10 minutes during business hours, and our design consultants have seen enough Indian rooms to give genuinely useful advice rather than just listing options.
Step 2 — Measure Your Windows: Follow the measurement guide above. Or photograph your windows and send them — we'll estimate from the photos, confirm the numbers with you, and nothing proceeds until you've agreed the dimensions. In select cities, we also offer a free home visit where our technician measures with professional tools — useful for tricky windows like bays, arches, and French doors.
Step 3 — Select Your Fabric: Order swatches for ₹99 each (refunded against your order) to see and feel the fabric in your actual room, under your actual lighting. We stock 100+ fabrics across every category — blackout, light-filtering, sheer, waterproof, fire-retardant, thermal. Our team will flag which fabrics work best for your room's orientation, your climate, and your household's needs.
Step 4 — Approve Your Spec Sheet: Before manufacturing begins, you receive a written specification: dimensions, fabric, colour reference, mount type, mechanism type, and total price. Review it, request any changes, sign it off. We make nothing without your written confirmation. This step eliminates surprises on both sides.
Step 5 — Manufacturing, Delivery & Installation: Your blinds are manufactured in 3–5 working days. Shipped free across India. In our serviceable cities, our installation team books an appointment at your convenience — usually within 48 hours of delivery — and fits the blinds in 15–20 minutes per window. For other cities, every blind comes with a comprehensive DIY installation kit: all hardware, a step-by-step video guide, and phone support from our team if you need it. Over 3,000 customers have fitted our blinds DIY with no prior experience. We also include a 5-year mechanism warranty and a 2-year fabric warranty in writing with every order.
